21 May: Duffy wins Ivor Novello award + she'll star in movie about Wales

Duffy won one award at the Ivor Novello awards yesterday. She took the gong for Most Performed Song for "Mercy".
Duffy got up on stage at the Ivor Novello music awards yesterday to receive her Most Performed Work gong for "Mercy". The singer said: "I was a girl from Wales, I did not know what music was. I knew I had a set of pipes and that would get me a frigging long way."
Duffy, who was up for three awards, received the PRS for music's most performed work for the anthem Mercy. Receiving her award, Duffy referred to the title and said: "It's all about karaoke, getting pissed in a pub. All these things which I can't have much control over".

But the most talked-about Duffy news to come from the awards was reported in The Sun today. Duffy is being tipped to sing the next Bond Theme (yeah I know we've heard it all before and it's a bit early now but make of it what you will) plus Duffy is apparently going to star in a movie about Wales.... Hmmm I wonder what that's all about. Today's Sun article is below:

Dai Another Day

DAME SHIRLEY BASSEY and TOM JONES have given James Bond soundtracks a proud Welsh history.

And the tradition of big voices from the valleys belting out 007 themes has a bright future now DUFFY has caught the attention of EON film bosses.

The Warwick Avenue warbler was in Bond bigwig MICHAEL G WILSON’s sights at the Ivor Novello Awards at the plush Grosvenor House hotel in London last night.

Producer Michael told me: “I would love to get Duffy to sing the next tune. I think she is wonderful. AMY WINEHOUSE would be good too.

“We have started work on the new film, which I can’t say anything about. DANIEL CRAIG is very keen to get going.”

Wino blew her chances of singing the theme for Quantum Of Solace last year when MARK RONSON threw in the towel on recording sessions because Amy “wasn’t ready”.

Duffy bagged the PRS Most Performed Work gong for No1 Mercy at last night’s top songwriting awards.

The blonde has already scooped three Brits and a Grammy this year.

Her mantelpiece will need an extension after this stunning run.

Duffy’s film career has also taken off — she is starring in a movie about Wales.

But she didn’t do a great job of selling the script to BADLY DRAWN BOY star DAMON GOUGH during a sneaky fag break last night.

She said: “I’m making a movie. It’ll probably be rubbish.”

He won’t be left shaken or stirred with that review, Duffy.

Just wanted to put this on record, a quote from eg White in the Telegraph on the relative contributions he and Duffy made to the writing of Warwick Avenue:

"The two big hits I had last year, I probably didn't contribute a single word to, 'Chasing Pavements' and 'Warwick Avenue.' You can tell I had a contribution because of the orchestration and the chords and the atmosphere, but in terms of fundamental story, tune and vocal delivery, its all them, both songs."

Yep, I think that's the way all the songs on her album were put together.

Eg. Mercy:

Which came first, the lyrics or the melody?

I’d already written the lyrics to Mercy, it was like this melodic poem in my mind, which I just had to get out, and I knew exactly what I wanted it to sound like. Steve was very patient. He sat at the piano and put chords underneath it and we built the song from the bottom up. It’s very important that my songs start from an organic source, rather than a drum loop. You can dress it up how you like but at the end it’s about the strength of the song, the melody and the words. The lyrics were about having a feeling towards someone, whether it’s a romantic feeling or just some chemistry that you don’t want, and you desperately want to be released from that feeling ...
