Duffy Live DVD - Is it Official?

The saga continues - read my earlier blogpost about it.

I was sent this photo from Duffysmate (Massive thanks Duffysmate!) who procured a copy from an Amazon marketplace seller for under a tenner. Make sure you guys don't get ripped off and pay £17+ for this (which an ebay seller is trying to get for it) as we still aren't sure whether it is official or not.
Click the photo for a larger image.

Duffysmate says:
I have received the Japan DVD and I have to say that both the visual and audio quality are superb. From the credits it looks like the production has been done by a small Japanese company, maybe licensed by Universal Group. Duffy's performance is one of the best I have seen her give. Certainly worth buying in my opinion, the box contains a picture disc and flyer with the same pic as the front cover and a track listing.
Personally I'm a happy with the version which was recorded from Japanese TV so I'm giving this one a miss for now....

Please leave a comment if you have any opinions or info about whether this DVD is official.

Merry Christmas Duffy fans!

Duffy Diary Photos - Looking back to 2008

Joy posted photos of the Guardian's Feb 2008 Duffy Diary article featuring some photos. You can still read the Duffy Diary article here or here.

But the reason I'm posting is that Ellegirl used these same photos and more similar photos way back in 2008 also. I linked to it on my blog way back in May 2008 but I figured I'd post these photos so that all can see them, now that Duffy fans are talking about them on Joy's blog....

Joy's blog is mainly from a fashion perspective and she features photos of magazine articles and mainly stuff about Duffy's outfits etc. Keep up the good work Joy!

Duffy Dumps Manager?

As reported today by the Daily Star - whether or not it is true it seems to be already spreading like wildfire throughout the internet "news".

Daily Star, Dec 23rd 2009

MEGA-selling Duffy has sacked the manager who guided her to stardom.

Jeannette Lee signed the Welsh star, 25, when she was a struggling waitress.

One insider told me: “Duffy claims Lee wanted her to do cheesy TV shows, when Duffy wants her career to be just about her music.”

Duffy Live in Japan DVD

Despite the fact that there are a ton of links out there to webshops from Denmark and other countries for this DVD please proceed with caution.

The exact same concert (from the Liquid Room in Tokyo) was aired in Japan last December. Since then the bootleg dvd of this concert has been freely (or "swapably") available amoungst the dvd bootlegging community. I haven't checked it yet (busy Christmas time for my business)

Please be aware that some have said this is available on Amazon. It's not available officially through Amazon, it is only offered by Amazon marketplace sellers i.e. anyone could have added the entry on Amazon.

I don't know for sure whether this is a fake, but I suspect it is because of a number of reasons:

1) The entire DVD contents have been freely available on the net since this October 2008 concert was aired on Japanese TV in December 2008.
2) The cover photo is freely obtainable on the net since it is from the 2007 SPIN magazine photoshoot. Scans of that magazine article and photos are available on the net.
3) There is no Duffy logo and no (typically black and white) Duffy signature on it.
4) We've had no advertising for this item in the UK. The UK is the biggest market for a Duffy DVD because we've made Duffy a top 10 artists here so many times already.
5) No mention of this item on the official Duffy websites (not that I have found as yet aanyway, but if you find someonething do let me know).
6) No hmv or official listing for this release (akthough if it was to be a non-UK release there probably wouldn't be one anyway).

On the otherhand there are only a few reasons to believe it is genuine:
1) The time is ripe for a Duffy live release, especially before Christmas.
2) The cover appears to have a barcode which when searched on google brings up listings from Danish online music shops.
3) The release date seems to be quoted as 23rd Nov or 30th Dec.

Please do keep me posted if you find anything to prove/disprove it.

Merry Christmas!

New Duffy LIVE EP (TLA)

Buy it from iTunes here.

1. Warwick Avenue (Live At the Theater of Living Arts)

2. Syrup & Honey (Live At the Theater of Living Arts)

3. Rockferry (Live At the Theater of Living Arts)

4. Mercy (Live At the Theater of Living Arts)

5. Hanging On Too Long (Live At the Theater of Living Arts)

I haven't had a listen of this yet as I am unable to find it on UK iTunes (so it may be a US only release). Let me know if you find it on other iTunes sites....

It's always good to get a new Duffy release, but looking at the setlist it's a shame that they stuck with the album tracks (in fact its a shame there's no Stepping Stone as that one has to be my favourite) as the recording was from this gig in Philadelphia back in August 2008, and the original setlist was this:

Syrup & Honey
Hanging on Too Long
Breaking My Own Heart
Warwich Avenue
Cry To Me
Delayed Devotion
Stepping Stone
Oh Boy

Distant Dreamer

VV Brown slags off Duffy again to a reporter

This time to a Welsh reporter.... for a "very intelligent" person who turned down a place at Oxford, VV doesn't show much genius by slagging off Duffy on her home ground (i.e. to a reporter for a Welsh newspaper just before she plays a gig @ Clwb Ifor Bach tonight - I wouldn't be surprised if tickets were still available...)

Here's the article. But to save you the trouble of reading all about VV Brown I'll give you the key snippets:
VV Brown dumped a major record label because they wanted to manipulate her. She wonders aloud to Gavin Allen if Duffy could have done the same.

“I love Amy Winehouse,” she says.

“She is an amazing songwriter who reveals herself honestly in songs about her life. With Duffy it’s a bit like a record company got hold of a girl after the Amy Winehouse thing, got a lot of people to write soul songs for her, packaged her up and sold millions of records.

But one thing us Duffy fans will agree wholeheartedly with is VV Brown's opinion that Duffy and Winehouse are "pole apart". Yeah VV, you're not wrong there.

Finally, another "intelligent" insight VV provides:
“If [the record label] had made me like Duffy I think I would have died.”
Yeah, I agree: they would have had one hell of a job on their hands had they attempted such a feat.

Where is this photo of Duffy from? CLOSED

UPDATE: Of course! It was from the 2008 Spirit Of Life Award Dinner on October 15 where she covered "I Second That Emotion" from Doug Morris. Succo provides this link, for which he deserves muchos cudos. :-)

Here's the article about it I remember reading at the time...

That was fun. Perhaps we should do it again!

The date said 15th Oct 2008 but that could be a red herring. My gut feeling is a private showcase that at the time we didn't hear much about but I suppose it could have been a tv appearance with a snazzy outfit like that.

Answers on postcard... o actually, since Royal Mail are striking left right and centre, (but the BBC is BIZARRELY NOT TELLING ANYONE ABOUT IT - I sent a first class large letter to London Sept 26th and they got it yesterday!) you'd better leave a comment instead.

Katy Brand mocks Duffy - funny or not? what do you think?

Update - Duffy in new Welsh movie "Patagonia"

As reported earlier this year, Duffy has a role as a character called "Sissy" in Welsh-language movie "Patagonia". The movie has now moved into post-production so details on its release date will possibly be available by the end of year.

There is now a brief synopsis of the movie from here:

A contemporary double road movie set in Wales and Argentina. One of the film's narratives follows an old Patagonian lady (Cerys) and her neurotic neighbour's son (Alejandro) though Wales as they search for her mother's farm. The other story features the journey of a thirty-something Welsh couple (Rhys and Gwen) with fertility problems as they travel through Welsh Patagonia on a photographic trip. The language of the film is mainly Welsh and Spanish.

Duffy's red Miu Miu shoes up for Charity Auction!

Duffy's shoes are currently being auction for charity - 100% of the final auction price will go to the Group B Strep Support charity. Click here to see the item on ebay and go and bid bid bid for this good cause. Details about the charity:
Group B Strep Support
About this charity:
Group B streptococcus (GBS) is the UK's most common life-threatening infection in newborn babies. Without preventative medicine, GBS infects approximately 700 babies annually - 75 die and 40 survivors suffer long-term problems. Yet most GBS infections are preventable by offering higher-risk women antibiotics in labour. GBSS needs funds to inform pregnant women and their health professionals how to do this ... and save tiny lives.

A couple of articles...

There is this nice article about Duffy on (thanks for the heads up!)

And also there is this silly article about Duffy in the Daily Star (that oh-so-relaible source of information). Thanks to Succo's early morning email I have known about this all day and was thinking whether to post it or not. So all I'm doing is posting the link for you to check out if you really want to. But don't believe a word of it. Duffy would have to be drunk, stupid or having a laugh to behave that way and tell her story to a not-so-innocent cab driver, so take it with a pinch of salt.

Here is the German interview that succo found

The Sun think so and since they published it has spread over the internet news websites like wild fire. Here's the link.

I'm not putting their story on the blog because A. it may not be true anyway and B. If it is true they are strongly implying it is a relationship of convenience on his part which isn't very nice. I wouldn't want anyone saying that about my bloke anyway.

I will put their photo up though so that we can at least see who they are talking about. :-)

Duffy wanted to sing at Lineker's wedding?

The Sun reckons anyway. Here's the link.

And as for Easyjet I reckon Duffy will be OK because she is short and small. LOL

Lulu Does Mercy on UK TV

Tom Meadows Interview

A very full and meaty article about Tom Meadows' experiences (including, later on in the article, all about being Duffy's drummer).
Thanks for the link in the shoutbox! Keep 'em coming people! :-)

My fave quote:
For me, the pinnacle of the weirdness was doing a gig at the Bodega bar in Nottingham, Duffy had been No. 1 for about 3 weeks with both album and single and she was on a bus, parked outside the venue doing her makeup by candlelight because there was no electricity to power the bus and we were in a toilet downstairs which was our dressing room, I had to move the cymbal out of the way in order to get to my kit.

Hello, I'm back!

OK so I still feel a bit bad but I've had enough chicken soup to last a life time so I was back at work this week and also I'll be back updating the Duffy blog...

The Hurricane festival was aired on German TV last night and Succo has kindly recorded it! I managed to convert it to mpeg, cut them up and am putting them on youtube.

They aired Rain on Your Parade, Warwick Avenue and Cry to Me. Audio available here.

Rain On Your Parade is below:

When I'm feeling better....

.. then I'll update this blog. But for now I have a horrible cold and just don't feel very good at all. I will be back though. So if you have anything of note drop me an email or message in the shout box. Meanwhile check out this video - don't know why everyone is making such a big deal really! Isn't the audio what we've already heard and hasn't the video been up on facebook for like years?!

Thanks alot people.
Bye for now.
Cough, cough!
Sniffle, sniffle!

Speculation continues about Capri trip.....

Why they keep calling Jon a "mystery man" is beyond me. Also they seem to avoid the fact that Tom is in some pics...

A prime example of this is here. Page 1 shows Tom, Page 3 shows Jon, Page 5 shows Tom again, Pages 8 and 9 make it look like just Duffy and Jon are hanging around on the pier, Page 10 shows another guy altogether, and it's not until Page 12 that you see it is a boat trip with loads of people on there (Jon, Tom, tattoo guy plus more LOL).

Maybe Mr Pap got it right when he explains:
She’s used to performing in front of packed-out arenas, but yesterday Duffy played at an all-together more intimate venue when a very wealthy Italian businessman paid the star thousands of pounds to sing at a family wedding.

Apparently the singer and her entourage were flown by private jet to the Amalfi Coast where they were given luxury suites at Richard Branson's refurbished Palazzo Sasso, which is ranked among the top 10 best hotels in the world.

And do you want to know how much Duffy was paid to play in front of guests at the wedding? Around £100,000! The lucky thing.

Surprise, surprise then - Duffy is with her bandmates and it's not a romantic holiday at all!

But then he obviously misses the point and says this:
Anyway yesterday before her performance we spotted Duffy going on a little sightseeing tour around the beautiful Amalfi coast with a mystery man. The Mercy singer has often complained about being single in the past, but judging by these snaps she may have actually managed to find a new man!

Not exactly genius detectives then, these paps. Check Duffy out on youtube and you can identify the "mystery man/men" LOL.

The Sun adds to speculation and seems to place alot of emphasis on Duffy's bra-less escapade... wake up Sun. We're in a post-feminist era now you know. Kiddies learn at school how their grandmas burnt their bras... or at least they should do if I was deciding on the curriculum. LOL

Duffy the Vampire Slayer

Very poor "comedy" sketch if you ask me. The BBC have been plugging this on the BBCiPlayer channel.
  1. Why does Duffy look fat in the cartoon?
  2. Why is there nothing more to this sketch other than a similarity between the names "Buffy" and "Duffy"?
  3. Why now? Last year there was a point (when Duffy was lesser known) when it seemed every interviewer asked her about the vampires... but that jokes seems to have worn off by now so why is this sketch on now?
