At the beginning of the year it would have been hard to believe that Duffy would get three Grammy nominations, yet at the same time I’m a little disappointed she didn’t get a nom for Album of the Year. I can understand not getting Record or Song, after all there are lots of fans who class Mercy as one of her weaker songs and it was probably the only one entered by Universal.

I think Duffy is still suffering for a couple of pieces of misinformation that have dogged her career. Firstly that Wawffactor was somehow a Reality show like X-factor etc. This displays a complete lack of understanding of the linguistic position in Wales. Less than a million people speak Welsh and until very recently most Welsh speakers were not allowed an education in their mother tongue and could be sent to prison if they tried to use the language in any official capacity. Nowadays Welsh is encouraged but faces an uphill struggle against the universal English language culture. In order to interest young people in the language the Welsh TV channel ran the Wawffactor show as a counter-attraction to the popular English language shows. There were no prizes and a number of young singers were invited to appear on it …this being seen as a patriotic duty on their part rather than as the pathway to the stars. The thing is that people outside Wales don’t understand this background, they think Duffy is a reality show graduate with all the snobbish baggage that label carries.

The second point is the feeling that Duffy is an Amy wannabe, the product of a record company search – someone who was manufactured as Alison Goldfrapp in her ignorance maintained. They don’t know that Duffy was writing fine songs back in 2002/2003, that Rockferry was recorded in 2004 before Winehouse’s first album came out or that it was a free download in the Observer newspaper before Back2Black was released. Duffy’s album was recorded on the cheap before she even signed with Polydor …. She isn’t a manufactured artist at all. Trouble is people think she is and that damages her credibility.

I think Duffy fans need to stamp on all this misinformation, wherever they see it. Spell out the facts on youtube and blog comments and get the truth across. I can see Adele – who is a Brit school graduate – cleaning up because people think that Duffy is the manufactured artist, its unfair. Sorry to go on.

The UK and US media are blatantly biased and corruptly pro Brit school. No outsiders allowed. They are probably also the major shareholders.
