Duffy to take a break from the music business
Welsh songstress Duffy has said she will take a break from the music industry after suffering disappointing sales on her latest single.
Representatives of the 26- year-old, who found fame and fortune with her debut album Rockferry, said she would be leaving the public spotlight but was planning a further album.
A statement released yesterday said: “Duffy is taking a break before starting work on her next album.”
Press speculation over the weekend hinted that the Bangor-born singer was planning a quiet life with Welsh international boyfriend Mike Phillips.
A friend was quoted as saying she was ready to “have babies, get married and live in the country”.
The source added: “She’s really down about the last album, Endlessly.
“It didn’t sell well and charted terribly and she isn’t trying again and making a comeback.
“She wants to have a quiet life and start over.”
Duffy sold fewer than 4,000 copies of her single Well, Well, Well in three days when it was released just before Christmas.
Reports claimed she was suffering after dumping her main songwriter and producer, ex-Suede man Bernard Butler, and the woman who discovered her, Jeanette Lee.
Two weeks ago she told the Western Mail how she nearly gave up on her singing career despite the incredible success of her 2008 platinum debut album, which entered the UK at number one.
The album sold six million copies worldwide and with her single Mercy, she became the first Welsh female singer to achieve a number one hit in 25 years.
In 2009, she won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album for Rockferry, and she was nominated for two other Grammy awards.
She also picked up three Brit Awards: British Breakthrough, Best Female Solo and Best British Album.
