Duffy wins Grey's Anatomy season finale exposure

Universal’s US campaign for Duffy has been further buoyed by Mercy last night featuring in the season four finale of hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.

The track was one of a handful of recordings by UK acts to feature on the show, which was broadcast last night across the US by ABC. The programme, which has a huge reputation for lifting sales of tracks which it features, also used tracks by Adele, Coldplay, Bryn Christopher and Ida Maria in the closing episode. Some 21.5m people watched the show, according to Nielsen Media Research.

The use of Mercy comes in the week Duffy's debut album Rockferry, released by Mercury in the US, debuted at number four on the Billboard 200, making her only the second British female solo artist after Leona Lewis to start her account on the chart in the top five. Meanwhile, Mercy, which a week ago dropped five places on the Hot 100, recovers to vault 66-27 as the chart’s bigger radio and sales gainer.

Universal will be looking for the Grey’s Anatomy placement for Mercy to have a similar effect to the one experienced by Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars, which prominently featured in the closing scenes of the season two finale. It helped the track reach a peak of five on the Hot 100, while parent album Eyes Open reached 27 on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold for 500,000 sales.

Universal UK international vice president Hassan Choudhury says, "For us Grey's Anatomy was a crucial part of the global marketing for Snow Patrol and if we can have the same level of success with the Grey's Anatomy sync with Duffy that we had with Snow Patrol then we'll be very happy."
